Description
Adelfas. Suarez lagoons. Nature Reserve. Spain
The Charca Suárez Concerted Nature Reserve, in Motril, in the heart of Poniente Beach, an enclave of just over thirteen hectares located in the plain of the Guadalfeo River, is the most important wetland on the Granada coast. The underground waters that make it up come to the surface at different points, creating perennial lagoons that are complemented by the contribution of irrigation water through different ditches. It is one of the best birdwatching points in all of Europe, a space where you can see, in just one afternoon, more than a dozen different species of wild waterfowl.
The benign climatic conditions of this natural reserve, since it has an average annual temperature of more than 17ºC, together with the great availability of water from the Guadalfeo River and the melting of Sierra Nevada, favor the existence of a large number of animals and plants.
In the shallow water areas, the asparagus and the lily inhabit while, as we move away, the reed beds, the grass and legume meadows settle next to some patches of traditional crops such as sugar cane.
La Charca de Suárez constitutes a privileged place for the wintering, nesting and migration of aquatic birds, as well as for the reproduction of amphibians, in the case of the chameleon. Among the wintering birds, the Squacco heron, the flamingo and the spoonbill stand out. The latter, although it is frequent in Andalusia, is rare in the province of Granada. Throughout the year the visitor will also be able to observe coots, white wagtail and grebes.
